Come join the Norman Arts Council in an all-new 2nd Friday! Spend the evening with the Norman art community at 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on February 10th from 6-9pm. Guests are invited to walk throughout the city of Norman and the Downtown Arts District. Experience the community, the refreshments and the local art!

Bring your family to enjoy the superb singers from Cimarron Opera, presented by Performing Arts Studio. Also performing is the instrumental OU Brass Quintet at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. The museum will also be showing a thirty-minute film, More Perfect Union.

Gallery 123 will spotlight artist Pam Bradford. The artist earned her BFA from Columbia College and her MFA from the University of Missouri. Bradford specializes in pencil paintings. Her art includes portraiture, landscape and still life. Some of her works include Basking Toys, A teapot from childhood, Early Morning Light, and Director’s Chairs.

Students are also contributing to the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art. Dreamer Concepts will host Dreamer 41: Tour de Quartz. Tour de Quartz features work by high school students throughout Oklahoma. They were selected to study at the Oklahoma Arts Institute.

In addition, Firehouse Art Center will also exhibit students’ artwork from Healing Studio from February 10th to March 21st. The studio is designed to enhance lifestyles and promote healing. The Healing Studio is an inviting place for individuals with varying degrees of cognitive, physical and artistic abilities to be challenged, educated and celebrated through visual arts education, creativity and self-expression. The exhibition is an excellent opportunity for students to display their work publicly. Patrons are invited to meet with the students and instructors to further discuss their artwork and ideas.

H2OK: Native Response to Water Issues in Oklahoma strives to combine art and discussion presented by MAINSITE Contemporary Art: Home of the Norman Arts Council. Artists from across Oklahoma’s diverse tribal landscape will express cultural attitudes to water in all of its forms. This includes rivers, oceans, rain, drinking water and environmental aspects of water. They will discuss political realities of our dwindling water supply and the aesthetics of water within their cultural practices. Artists are expressing their concern through several different techniques. Underwater photography, digital art, sculpture, printmaking, painting, and installations will all be sparking notes of conversation about Oklahoma’s water situation. All the artists are either living in Oklahoma or are affiliated with at least one of Oklahoma’s 39 tribes.

In addition, NAC will have exhibition of Lines of Language/Language of Lines. This exhibition features the recent fiber works of Heather Clark Hilliard. As the title hints, the objects explore a connection between visual and linguistic communication. Stitches represent words to Hilliard, as rows of them signify sentences. She also suggests the format of each work symbolizes a scroll. In Hilliard’s alphabet, hatch marks of wire and knots of wool replace letters as tools to send messages. The exhibition documents Hilliard’s investigation of this metaphor and invites the viewer to consider how the artist communicates meaning beyond language.

Another artist participating is Lesha Maag. Her work will be on display at Fusion Fitness and Yoga. From 7-10pm come enjoy a drink, her work and meet the instructors of Fusion Fitness and Yoga.

Other galleries also announced new exhibitions. Third Eye Gallery will be featuring Stephen Deckard. Deckard’s “Divine Dimensions” is a series of 18” x 24” color pencil and pastel drawings based on sacred geometry. Geometric artwork has been felt to resonate with cosmic significance since ancient times and is visible in religious art throughout the world. Deckard’s artwork expresses his spiritual world.

Tribes131 will be presenting unique Native American arts. The 5th annual “Love of Ledger Art – History in Pictures” will be held during 2nd Friday Circuit of Art. Guests are welcome to chat with some of the artists. Participating artists include Dolores Purdy Corcoran, Michael Horse, Steven Judd, George Levi, Elena Carol Pate and Dwayne Wilcox.

With the fast-approaching Valentine’s Day, Unlabeled Apparel and Sublime Signs Creative Studio are proud to present various crafts and hand-made jewelries in their trunk shows and workshops. Art collections from Jason and Amanda Joy Wells might be the perfect gift for your significant other.

Jacobson House welcomes visitors with Indian Tacos and talks during its event. The Gotebo family talks about the transition from Kiowa to Christian ways at 6:30pm and Kevin Warren Smith will discuss the transition from Hide and Ledger Art to Contemporary Art at 7pm.

Sharron Rae’s photography will be featured at Again…Stuff that’s New Now. Stop by the store for snacks and refreshments to view her creations.

Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art (555 Elm Ave) will have live music from OU Brass Quintet and a short film More Perfect Union (30 min) on Friday, February 10^th.

Dreamer Concepts (324 E Main St) will host Dreamer 41: Tour de Quartz featuring works by high school students from throughout the state of Oklahoma who were selected to study at the Oklahoma Arts Institute.

The Performing Arts Studio (200 South Jones Ave) will have singers from Cimarron Opera performing throughout the evening.

MAINSITE Contemporary Art: Home of the Norman Arts Council (122 E Main St) welcomes guests to the opening reception of H2OK: Native Response to Water Issues in Oklahoma featuring individual artist Heather Clark Hilliard. Visitors will also be treated to the Water Closet Gallery presenting the work of Eric Piper.

2nd Friday Circuit of Art on November 11!

NORMAN, Ok. – It’s your favorite time of the month, again! Come enjoy a Friday evening filled with the Norman art community at the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on Novemeber 11 from 6-9 p.m. Brought to you by the Norman Arts Council, guests are invited to walk throughout the City of Norman and the Downtown Arts District, experiencing the community, the refreshments, and of course- the local art!

Pleasure your ears this Friday with a live concert from Harp Chamber Music in the Natalie and Paul Buckthal Gallery at Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. In the Orientation Room two short films, “First and Female” and “All that Remains” will be viewed from the deadCENTER Film Festival.

Don’t forget to take the Campus Area Art Challenge! Visit at least three campus area art locations on 2nd Friday, participate in a scavenger hunt and turn in your completed form to be eligible to win a $50 gift certificate to Muse, the museum store at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. Participating institutions include OU’s Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Firehouse Art Center, Jacobson House Native Art Center and OU’s Fine Arts Library. Forms can be picked up and turned in at any of the four locations.

Help a great cause as veteran Mike Simmons features his work at Dreamer Concepts in the exhibit, “Dreamer 39: Art for Anderson’s Heart.” Simmons tackles the large canvases with the use of one, limited-dexterity hand, and all proceeds from his exhibit raise money for his grandson, Anderson.

Local band Crown Imperial will be playing this Friday at Anty Shanty at 8 p.m. Come to this free concert to hear what Doug Hill from the Norman Transcript describes as a “highly listenable take on indie rock.”

STASH welcomes all on 11-11-11 for the return of Norman’s finest fire dancers, and the opening show of Norman native, Nathan Price. Enjoy bites, beverages and live dj music during this celebration to make the zeros mad on Friday, 11-11-11.

Get into the holiday spirit this Friday with the Firehouse Art Center! Enjoy the apple cider and holiday music as you peruse the unique gift items in the Holiday Gift Gallery, opening this Friday until December 24.

Feast your eyes on J. Kent Stewart’s “Drawn of the Dead” which is a combination of realism, impressionism, characterization and surrealism at MerryBelle’s Gifts, Art & Tea this Friday. Most of his paintings are a tribute to those who have had an impact on him and have since passed on. Then, you will be able to turn your eye’s over to a bit of whimsy and fantasy on Madison Plumlee’s paintings on drawings. Her focus is to tug at your heartstrings with cuddly and cute animals, combined with bright, candy colors, allowing you to take the time to enjoy the cheery and unexpected. As always, we will have live music and sips and bits to enjoy. Scissortail School of Art will be offering to let you make turkeys from your and your child’s handprint. As always, this craft is free and for all ages!

With the 125 pieces of art normally displayed at Park on Main, there will also be an assortment of oil paintings on canvas by Nalini Sabapathy. She will be onsite showing her portraits and Tuscan landscapes from her time studying art in Italy.

There is a lot happening at LWPB Architecture this Friday! View the interesting color combinations and plays on shape in Jim Shelley’s glasswork including pendants, jewelry pieces, plates and more. Also, Norman High School student Monica Saavedra will be showing her photography. You won’t want to miss this emerging artist! Lastly, Lorena McClain, LWPB’s own intern architect, will be showing her mixed media pieces.

Due to popular interest Third Eye Gallery is holding the “Life, the Universe, and Everything” exhibit for a little bit longer! Come check out Norman artist Garrett Shockey’s pieces as he transforms the forgotten and discarded into things new and beautiful.

Lastly, the Performing Arts Studio and the Jacobson House have collaborated to present an exhibition of Oklahoma Native American art at the Norman Depot from 6-9 p.m. View the works of art from the Jacobson House permanent collection and several individual Native American artists. Along with the pieces, enjoy light refreshments while listening to Jacobson House singers with John Kemble and Jacobson House flute player Kevin Connywerdy.

Downtown Sound Music Cooperative (115 S. Crawford Ave.) teams up with the Norman Queer Alliance to proudly present the Third Annual Queer and Women’s Art Show. All are welcome to join and enjoy the live acoustic talents of Cait Moore & Aulbry Freeman.

Anty Shanty (318 E. Main St.) features a free, live indie rock concert by local band, Crown Imperial starting at 8 p.m.

Park on Main (3750 W. Main Street, Apt W) adds an assortment of oil paintings on canvas by Nalini Sabapathy to the collection of 125 pieces of art normally displayed at the office. Sabapathy will be onsite showing her portraits and Tuscan landscapes from her time studying art in Italy.

Gallery123 & Form+Function Lab (123 E. Main St, above Forward Foods) welcomes visitors to view new work by participating artists. Summer hours for Gallery 123 are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 4:30 - 7:30, during 2nd Friday Circuit of Art or by appointment.

Third Eye Gallery (120 E. Tonhawa) continues with the “Life, the Universe, and Everything” exhibit by Norman native, Garrett Shockey Shockey transforms the forgotten and discarded into things new and beautiful.

MerryBelle’s Gifts, Art & Tea (230 E. Main St.) mixes realism, impressionism and surrealism with whimsical and fantasy with the work of two artists,J. Kent Stewart and Madison Plumlee. Stewart’s paintings are a tribute to those who have impacted him in his exhibit, “Drawn of the Dead.” Plumlee focuses on tugging at your heart strings with animals and bright colors. Scissortail School of Art invites you to come make turkeys using you and your children’s hands. As always, the crafts are free!

Maggy’s Thread Designs & Bill Williams’ Studio (122 E Main St) will be open for guests!

Sandalwood & Sage (322 E Main St) will be open for visitors and will be providing refreshments!

LWPB Architects (128 E Main St) will be featuring the work of three different artists, Jim Sheley, Monica Saavedra and Lorena McClain. Jim Shelley plays with color combinations and shape with his glasswork including pendants, jewelry pieces, plates and more. His work includes everything from funky and glitzy to classy and interesting. Norman High School student Monic Saavedra will be showing her photography.Lastly, Lorena McClain, LWPB’s own intern architect, will be showing her mixed media pieces.

TGI2F! Come enjoy a Friday evening filled with the Norman art community at the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on October 14 from 6-9 p.m. Brought to you by the Norman Arts Council, guests are invited to walk throughout the City of Norman and the Downtown Arts District, experiencing the community, the refreshments, and of course – the local art!

Many unique events are happening this Friday that you’ll want to check out! Visit MerryBelle’s for a new kind of art exhibit. Four local artists will battle it out in MerryBelle’s “ART BATTLE OK!” while DJ Neu provides some awesome beats! The artists will also have additional art on display for sale through this month, and all proceeds will go to Bridges, a Norman organization that helps empower high school students in family crisis pursue their education. Along with the art battle, Scissortail will be offering a “make and take” craft featuring marbles and paint. Come see the new items featured in the boutique for this Halloween season and sample MerryBelle’s Ginersnap Cookie Tea. Between the live painting, music, food, wine and giving there is something for everyone at MerryBelle’s.

After enjoying the scene at Merrybelles, come celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead) at Sandalwood & Sage from 7-10 p.m. Astrud Reed, local multimedia artist specializing in indigenous art, will share Mexican Folk Art Traditions, including Sugar Skull decorating. Musical due Alegria Real, Chistina Audas & Armando Rivera, will perform Latin American and Afro-Carribean music. Come bring copies of pictures and other items to place on the Community Ofrenda (alter) as you light a candle to honor your deceased loved ones. Sugar Skulls and Mexican Folk Crafts are $2 each, cash only.

If it’s dance that you’re into, you won’t want to miss the performance at Lifelong Artists as six adults from the Awen Academy perform excerpts from the ballet, Don Quixote, at 7 p.m. Following the presentation, the dancers will serve as a panel for discussion about continuing ballet as an adult.

Check out Shockey’s latest pieces reflecting his interest in ancient cultures and love for life and cosmic possibilities, including a garden installation!

Downtown Art & Frame is excited to exhibit the semi-abstract acrylic paintings and mixed media drawings by artist John Brandenburg this Friday from 6-10 p.m. The Norman native and artist for some 40 years, celebrates the nature and the human figure through his semi-abstract work.

Also this Friday, STASH welcomes all for bites, beverages, and an opening reception for Nicholas Richardson and his exhibit, “The Toltec.” Experience a mixture of aesthetic styles as The Toltec, Nicholas’ alter ego, explores the artistic energies that he gains precious life from.

Lastly, come support the young artists of Norman and enjoy a fresh view on color and culture at Dreamer Concepts. The artists at Wilson Elementary School produced vividly colored designs based on the paintings of the Australian Aboriginal people in “Dreamer 38: The Arts Education Experience.”

Come check out what the art community has been up to in Norman this past month at the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on September 9 from 6-9 p.m. Brought to you by the Norman Arts Council, guests are invited to walk throughout the City of Norman and the Downtown Arts District, experiencing the community, the refreshments, and of course- the art!

Lots of events are going on this Friday that you won’t want to miss! Visit Studio 360 to see the GIRL POWER Photo Voice interactive exhibit. Eleven of Norman’s seventh and eight grade girls, involved with the Center for Children and Families, Inc. Girl Power group, took photos representing their community or point of view, discussed them together, and developed narratives to go with their photos over the last three months. Come see the significant health disparities and negative social and health outcomes impacting women and girls through the lens of these local girls.

Also contributing to the local feel of the art circuit this month, the Firehouse Art Center will be featuring the Recourse for Discourse exhibition highlighting seven up and coming Norman artist, and includes work from Kate Babb, Kendall Brown, Marina Crawford, Erin Elise, Jessica Joy, Hershel Self, and Craig Swan.

It’s STASH’s first birthday! Come enjoy the trifecta of goodness that will include a community-based art project, original art by members of “Lifestyles” art program for alter-able adults, and the celebration of STASH’s first birthday.

And don’t forget to take the Campus Area Art Challenge! Visit at least three campus area art locations on 2nd Friday, participate in a scavenger hunt and turn in your completed form to be eligible to win a $50 gift certificate to Muse, the museum store at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. After viewing the films, stop by The Santa Fe Depot as The Performing Arts Studio hosts nature photos by Randy Jones while Arabesque performs their unique blend of Irish and world folk music from 7-9 p.m. Miranda Arana and Steve Vanlandingham present a mixture of Celtic, Arabic, Judeo-Spanish, Turkish and other world folk traditions through flutes, whistles, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, oud and a wooden slit drum.

Between music sets, listen to J. Don Cook read from his book, Shooting from the Hip: Photographs and Essays. A photographer for the Oklahoman and now a fine artist, Cook will have books to sell and sign from 6:30-9 p.m.

For hands on fun this Friday check out the Jacobson House as they feature “Timeless Traditions”- Legacy of the Kiowa Five. Join in for an evening filled with clothing, dance styles, leatherwork, beadwork and cloth work as we celebrate the legacy of the Kiowa Five. The event will feature utilitarian works of art and photos, and speak with photographer Lester Harragarra at 6:30 p.m.

If it’s dancing that you’re into, then you won’t want to miss Sonder Music, Dance & Art as they host the Hill Irish Dancers. Enjoy the irresistible music, colorful costumes, and fast-moving feet of these award-winning step dancers as they showcase both traditional and modern dances of the Emerald Isle.

Satisfy all your senses this month at Merrybelle’s as they feature the artwork of Christopher McDaniel and Patrick Gabrish. Christopher’s Sharpie drawings bring function out of chaos and please to the senses while Patrick’s colorful mixed media images are eye candy for all. Snacks and drinks are sure to satisfy your taste buds, while Scissortail School of Art will let you feel crafty in the back working with different mediums. To top it all off, live music will be performed all night so you’re ears don’t feel left out!

Lastly, you have to be sure you view the wearable art at Dreamer Concepts as they host the debut of Dreamer 37: “Before the Fall,” a fashion presentation by Parsons, the New School of Design graduate, Jamie McCarty. The idea for the collection comes from McCarty’s initial inspiration, found in 1920s silhouettes, and the opulence in living styles before the stock market crash. McCarty will exhibit her work through a fashion presentation, which consists of clothing shown both on mannequins and on live, still-standing models.

2nd Friday Circuit of Art in August!

The Norman Arts Council welcomes all to the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on August 12 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Art walkers will be treated to special events and local celebrities throughout the City of Norman as well as the Downtown Arts District.

This fall, take the Campus Area Art Challenge! Visit at least three campus area art locations on 2nd Friday, participate in a scavenger hunt and turn in your completed form to be eligible to win a $50 gift certificate to Muse, the museum store at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. The art locations include the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, the Firehouse Art Center, Jacobson House Native Art Center, and OU’s Fine Arts Library.

While visitors are taking part in the Campus Area Art Challenge, they can view the other activities along the way. The Firehouse Art Center features work from Children’s Summer Art Program. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art welcomes all visitors to the Art “a la Carte” with live music, and films. Jacobson House hosts an award ceremony for The Legacy Lives: Kiowa Youth Art Competition.

In the Downtown Arts District, visitors can spend all or part of the evening at one of the many venues, galleries, and shops along Main Street in historic downtown Norman. The Performing Arts Studio presents the work of photographer Randy Jones. Dreamer Concepts, Studio & Foundation opens Dreamer 36: Words on Canvas with a book release party.

Everyone is welcome to join in the fun at MAINSITE Contemporary Art: Home of the Norman Arts Council as they open The Inventory Show: A Special Selection of the Artists of MAINSITE Contemporary Art.

Bellydance teacher and performer, Marian Esáa, and her students will perform at Sonder Music, Dance & Art at 8:30pm. While Gray Owl Coffee invites visitors to support Keisha Register’s Wallpaper Project with the fundraiser featuring music by Seth McCarroll, Brine Webb, and DAD.

STASH welcomes Bombs Away Art Co. as they present Memento Mori, My Lovely, Lovely. Bombs Away Art Co. is rooted in punk rock and the DIY attitude and believes in the sacrament and respect of living beings and of being human. It was conceived through the observation of violence and the fragility of life and embraces the philosophy of engaging every moment, of living without dead time.

Art walkers will be treated to Heidi James, a new artist at the Gallery 123 artist collective, and the 2nd Annual Cardboard Show at Form+Function Lab with over a dozen artists upstairs at 123 East Main Street. All are also invited to head upstairs to Maggy’s Thread Designs and Bill Williams’ Studio at 122 East Main Street. 2nd Friday Circuit of Art in July!

The Norman Arts Council invites all to attend the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art in July as events take place throughout the city. Art walkers can choose one or more of the various events taking place indoors or out from 6:00pm – 9:00pm Friday, July 8.

The must attend event is the annual Midsummer Nights’ Fair at Lions Park presented by the Firehouse Art Center. The fair will feature artists, musicians, food and fun for all ages. Attendees can then venture indoors to the FAC Faculty Show or travel over to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art for art activities, Blues music in conjunction with KGOU & the Weekend Blues, and a film presented by deadCENTER Film Festival. All are also encouraged to visit the Jacobson House as they host the Kiowa Youth Art Competition.

For those inclined to visit the downtown arts district, there is much to see and hear. The Norman Arts Council has moved into the MAINSITE Contemporary Art Gallery and invites guests to join the staff and board of the NAC as we close the exhibit of Carol Beesley, Debby Kaspari, and Alan Atkinson.

The Performing Arts Studio presents the work of Jim Cobb once again as well as a reading by poet Alvin Turner from his newly released book, Hanging Men, in which he reveals the human elements—hubris, fear, desire, greed—behind the sensational and sensationalized 1909 vigilante hangings of four men who were slated to stand trial for the murder of a local businessman in Ada, OK.

Dreamer Concepts, Studio & Foundation opens its doors for Dreamer 35: the Thunderbird Artist Collective. STASH presents a mother and daughter show with the works of Chelsea & Asia Scudder. MerryBelle’s Gifts, Art & Tea features the work of Jenny Wright and Tom Farris as well as providing art activities for children in the Scissortail School of Art. Sandalwood & Sage welcomes guests for refreshments as they travel along the circuit.

Just around the corner on Gray Street, Sonder Music, Dance & Art showcases the new retail store featuring handmade, specialty, vintage and fair trade instruments and accessories. Sonder also welcomes guests to view the current exhibit Stars of the Cigar Box Guitar, Sarah Engel and Stewart Street Stringworks present an array f made and found homebuilt instruments, as well as photographs relating to the resurgence and significance of homebuilt musical instruments in the modern era.

Heading one block north to Tonhawa, attendees can visit the newly opened Third Eye Gallery in the Ashtanga Yoga Studio. The Third Eye Gallery will feature “Progressions” the work of Sarah Capshaw.

2nd Friday Circuit of Art – a monthly, citywide celebration of art – is a collaboration between artists, art organizations, and businesses, brought to you by the Norman Arts Council. The City of Norman seems somewhat empty now that summer break has arrived. However, the Norman Arts Council is pleased to announce the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on Friday, June 10, 2011 will be more fun than ever with a month of individual artists.

Events in and around the Downtown Arts District and central Norman welcome art-goers, family, and friends on a fun and free evening. All events take place from 6:00 pm to at least 9:00 pm Friday on what should be a warm summer night.

The Firehouse Art Center welcomes visitors to view its students’ work and see the architectural designs from David Wanzer of 308 Design Collaborative for their capital campaign “Keeping the Flame of Art Burning.”

Individual artists’ work will be on display at STASH, Pink Elephant Café, MAINSITE Contemporary Art, the Performing Arts Studio, Gallery 123, Third Eye Gallery, Jacobson House, MerryBelle’s Gifts, Art & Tea, and many others.

The Performing Arts Studio welcomes Jim Cobb and invites visitors to view his work while listening to the performance of Philipp Gulidov and friends. The Jacobson House opens its doors Friday evening for a welcome reception.

STASH presents the works of photographer Greer Owings-Husserl (photo above). Pink Elephant Café welcomes Erin Elise. The exhibit of Carol Beesley, Alan Atkinson, and Debby Kaspari will end with a closing reception this 2nd Friday at MAINSITE Contemporary Art.

Friday the 13th is scary no more – for the most part. The 2nd Friday Circuit of Art in May brings exhibit openings, Sister City art, and plenty of family fun throughout Norman this Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Norman Arts Council encourages the community to do as much as possible while still appreciating the incredible talent of Norman art and artists.

The new Third Eye Gallery is having its grand opening at Ashtanga Yoga Studio at 120 East Tonhawa. The inaugural exhibition, “Visions of Quiet Dignity: Photographs of South India,” includes 15 individual and group portraits shot by OU Professor of Art Andrew Strout in both black and white and color on visits to India between 1987 and 1995.

The Firehouse Art Center, 444 South Flood Avenue, exhibits architectural designs from David Wanzer of 308 Design Collaborative for the upcoming capital campaign beginning in June.

The Performing Arts Studio, located in the Santa Fe Train Depot at 200 South Jones, presents the Arabesque CD release party featuring live music from Miranda Arana and Steve Vanlandingham with guest artists Jeanell Jordan, Kathy Dagg, and Shanda McDonald.

2nd Friday Circuit of Art in April is all about living a green...

2nd Friday Circuit of Art in April is all about living a green lifestyle. The Norman Arts Council has collaborated with the Oklahoma Travel and Recreation Department, the Department of Environmental Quality, and the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau to create an ECO 2nd Friday Scavenger Hunt from 6:00 – 8:00 pm April 8, 2011.

Restaurants, coffee shops, and even the Norman Music Festival are working to become ECO Certified with TravelOK. To initiate this process, the Norman Arts Council invites community members to take part in a scavenger hunt of sorts. The hunt will lead participants to Michelangelo’s Coffee & Wine Bar, Gray Owl Coffee, Blu Fine Wine & Food, Pink Elephant Café, and end at STASH.

Environmental groups will also be set up at each venue to greet participants and inform the participants of the environmental efforts throughout Norman. The participating groups are the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, Sierra Club–Red Earth Group, Oklahoma Sustainability Network & Norman Sustainability Network, OUr Earth, and the Norman Music Festival Green Committee.

Participants who complete the trip to all five locations will enter to win prizes from the Norman Arts Council and the Oklahoma Travel and Recreation Department.

Keeping with the green theme, the Native Roots Market will be hosting a plant sale with local farmers on their sidewalk from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Keep an eye out for their “Bag Monster” who will be roaming around 2nd Friday and making appearances at the green footprints downtown.

STASH is featuring artist Timothy Elliott. Elliott paints things into old paintings, re-purposing them. This show will feature amended old arts (mostly paintings) that Elliott has rescued from all over. This is a very kid friendly show, because they tend to love the monsters that he paints.

These and many other events will take place during the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art throughout Norman on April 8, 2011 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

The Norman Arts Council once again invites music fans to the Norman Music Festival Wine Share from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The event has been relocated for this month to the Downtown Sound at 115 South Crawford between Main Street and Comanche Street.

Jacobson House (609 Chautauqua Ave) welcomes all art walkers to visit its gallery and learn about the history of the Jacobson House, the Kiowa Five, as well as the many artists that call it home.

The Norman Public Library (225 N. Webster Ave.) will have a come-and-go event that will feature Anne Morand, co-curator of the Bison exhibit when it originally was developed by the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Mont., who will discuss the exhibit with guests in attendance. Morand, curator of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, also will be at the library throughout the festival that takes place on Sunday.

Sonder Music (225 E Gray St.) presents Sarah Engel and Stewart Street Stringworks with a multimedia art exhibit exploring homemade musical instruments, with live performance by The Gimp’s Nephew at 8:30 p.m. The first known illustration of a cigar box instrument occurs in an etching from 1864. Come see present day cigar box instruments!

Dreamer Concepts (324 E Main St.) will host an opening reception for Dreamer 33: Music Made Visual featuring over 25 artists who created works related to music. The exhibit is not only visually stimulating, but is interactive.

‘Round the House Consignment Furniture (325 E Main St) will be having a sale on all framed artwork as well as refreshments for their guests.

MAINSITE Contemporary Art (122 E Main St) presents the 2011 OU MFA Exhibition: Opening Reception. After three years of hard work Samantha Dillehay, Mark Zimmerman, and Michael Elizondo Jr. will feature a diverse body of work including media, photography, and painting.

Elusive (209 W Main St) presents Live soldering of art: Eleven Endeavor’s at Elusive. Come see jewelry making in person and purchase what is created for you!

STASH (412 E Main St) is featuring artist Timothy Elliott. Elliott paints things into old paintings, re-purposing them. This show will feature amended old arts (mostly paintings) that he has rescued from all over. This is a very kid friendly show, because they tend to love the monsters that he paints.

Native Roots Market (132 W Main St.) welcomes PASSPORTS – Norman’s International and Sister City Organization – Photography Contest. Photos for the Student Contest “My Hometown-Norman” will depict sights and scenes of Norman that best show our city, people and culture that we can share with our Sister Cities in other countries. The International Travel Contest is open to all ages and requires the photos were taken outside the United States.

Gray Owl Coffee (223 E Gray St) is hosting the “In My Own Time” exhibition opening. Please come by and check out work by Michael Lortz, Ruth Ann Loveland, Margaret Kinkeade, and Lulu Wolf.

Michelangelo’s Coffee & Wine Bar (207 E Main St) will host John Calvin, Justin Bloss, and Joe Hopkins. Folk/Blues, Red Dirt/Country, and Singer/Songwriter music will be played in a round style.

Downtown Sound (115 S Crawford) presents POST TRAUMATIC SOUP – New Work from the KND and Friends. Sculptures and paintings from the old school KND FOLK. Artists include: Mr. Haveldids and Nots, The Father Phil, Rebelline, Spencer Tracy, Erica Nichols, Erin Elise, Mark White, Mandy Black, Nick Lillard, Joshie Thunders, Elly Edmondson, Darren Anderson, Tamara Jones, Mike Thurman, and Michael Kirby.

Anty Shanty (318 E. Main) once again brings music to 2nd Friday with local favorites Samantha Crain, Penny Hill, and The Boom Bang. Music begins at 7:30 pm.

The Art Therapy Center (123 E. Tonhawa St, #108) will have art, art therapists, and snacks. There will also be a tye dye fundraiser for Norman Groovefest. Visitors can tye dye their own fun stuff or dye ours. They have plenty of Groovefest tshirts to sell and dye for future sales.

Gallery123 (123 E. Main St.) celebrates its 1st Birthday! The artists will have a birthday cake to share as well as other surprises. There will also be a drawing for 2 gift certificates, each worth $50, to be redeemed in the gallery for merchandise. The drawing will be at 8:30 and you don’t have to be present to win. Only one ticket person.

2nd Friday Circuit of Art has big things in store in this month. If you are interested in learning about Native American fine art, head over to The Jacobson House, who will exhibit the art of James Auchiah, with guest co-curator Kevin Warren Smith giving a lecture over his artwork. Jacobson House will exhibit the art of James Auchiah completing their sixth year of featuring one member of the Kiowa artists who helped start the International Native American fine art movement. Native artist and guest co-curator Kevin Warren Smith will give a lecture over James Auchiah’s artwork and show a special work of James Auchiah for the lecture. The lecture will be held from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Auchiah’s family members will add family stories and history after the lecture.

Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art will be featuring Art “à la CART” with tempera paintings for the art activity (inspired by Josef Albers’ White Line Square VI), nontraditional Native-inspired folk music by Satori (psychedelic protest folk rock), Mo Pair (eclectic folk) and Kerry Folsom (world music), and two films by deadCENTER Film Festival: The Stand and Wasting Daylight. Visitors will enjoy free admission and will be able to visit the new exhibition, Mediterranea: American Art from the Graham D. Williford Collection, a survey of paintings of the Mediterranean culture by 19th and 20th century American artists from the Jean and Graham Devoe Williford Charitable Trust.

STASH will be on fire this month with fire dancing performances throughout the night. Then you can head over to the Performing Arts Studio to take part in the Big Read: The Things They Carried. The event will have music, stories, snacks, and refreshments for all!

2nd Friday Circuit of Art Events for March 11, 2011

• Firehouse Art Center – (444 S Flood, 405-329-4523) will feature the Corazon Watkins & Carolyn Faseler Exhibition, which will be on display at the FAC Gallery March 11 through April 18, 2011. The FAC Gallery is located inside the Firehouse Art Center at 444 S. Flood in Norman. Gallery hours are 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. A reception will be held on Friday, March 11, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the FAC Gallery. The gallery exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

• Dreamer Concepts Studio & Foundation - (324 E Main St, 405-701-0048) Dreamer Concepts is hosting the opening reception for Dreamer 32, an exhibit that examines points of view shared by individuals as they mature in the Norman community through artwork and recorded interviews. Dreamer 32 featured artists include Carol Bertine Ziehnert, George Weehunt, Meg Lowe, Lance Lowe, Teresa Galoob, Gregg Standridge, Sheryl Cozad, and Madeline Rugh. This exhibit will be available for viewing during Dreamer gallery hours until April 1st.

Tracey creates celtic relief carved pottery including mugs, chalices, plates and more. Tracey and her mom, Annette Kimball, have been crafting together for nearly 20 years under the name’ Tracey Creations’ AKA ‘Ye Cart Pottery’(Tracey spelled backwards). Tracey will have her pottery on display at Sandalwood & Sage March 11th through the end of the month and will have her pottery wheel at Sandalwood & Sage during the artwork for live demonstrations throughout the evening. Kids are encouraged to attend!

• Sonder Music, Dance, Art - (225 E Gray St, 405-474-9734) Patrick Roberts will perform guitar-generated sound sculptures at Sonder Music, Dance & Art at 8:00 p.m. The backdrop of this performance will be Sonder’s current exhibit, Immagini d’Italia, an entirely student-curated photography exhibition celebrating the Italian study abroad experience offered at the University of Oklahoma (presented by OU’s Baccano Club).

• STASH - (412 E Main St, 405-701-1016) is featuring the artist Thomas Shahan. From Shahan: “The images within my artwork are often attempts to materialize concepts or dreams I’ve had that I can’t quite verbalize. That said, the message is often secondary within my work as I feel art should be left up to the interpretation of the viewer. The artists Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Durer, Anders Zorn, Virgil Finlay, and Paul Landacre among countless others have all been large influences on my work. Whether it be a screen-print, a woodcut, or a painting - a strong sense of design, composition, and value contrast are all key components to how I create an image.” and will have fire dancing performances throughout the evening.
